‘Having grown up outside of a city, and London, there aren’t any opportunities for me locally to meet and so I think in terms of first steps of meeting other men or like minded people, were online and not at school,’ he says. He’s since dated people and turned to apps like Grindr, Hinge and Tinder to get into the dating scene as an adult. When he came out as gay aged 19, his parents were accepting. ‘In retrospect, it would have been nice to have had an early relationship because you feel more self-conscious exploring that kind of thing at an older age.’ So you would hear, “Oh, that’s so gay,” a lot. ‘It was that era of everything that was crap was called “gay”. At school, he didn’t feel like he was missing out while friends got boyfriends and girlfriends but this has changed with hindsight.
